Joe's Greenhouse and Farm Market, 2265 River Rd., Hermitage, has been supplying plants and vegetables to area residents since 1957. Joe Barovich Sf. started with a single trailer towed behind a Jeep, taking fresh vegetables to the Farrell's farmers market. Today Joe's Greenhouse and Farm Market features about 7500 sq. ft. of greenhouse space, stocked with everything from alyssum to zinnias and many varieties of vegetable plants. We also have a vegetable garden which supplies produce for local residents.
By Mother's Day a canopy of color is the first thing you see when you walk in to Joe's Greenhouse. Our youngest son Jess (16) grows his own flowers, and helps customers with his personal attention. The vegetable seedlings include a wide variety of peppers and tomatoes, with classics like Ox heart tomatoes and Midway peppers but also the newest hybrids on the market. Joseph (19), is already an experienced hand in the greenhouses, helping with planting, watering, and sales.
By the middle of July vegetables are ready for marketing. We attend the Farrell farmers market Tuesday-Friday and the Sharon's farmers market Wednesday-Saturday mornings 7:00am till noon throughout the summer and fall. Continuing with potatoes, winter squash, and sauer kraut.
We support the Pennsylvania state senior WIC program, which provides vouchers to senior citizens in exchange for locally grown produce. In the continuing support of the senior WIC program we have provided additional services of phone in orders for fresh produce (724)-962-5511, that can be picked up at their farm or at the market.
As a continuous family affair for 50 years we are proud to be part of a long tradition of local farming and marketing in the Shenango Valley area The support of the residents, local and state government has played an important part in keeping this tradition going.
